NanoStudio 2 is the successor to the original NanoStudio, an app held in high regard by musicians for its usability, quality and productivity.
With six years development behind it, NanoStudio 2 builds upon the same design principles that made its predecessor so popular and then takes a quantum leap with a massive range of extra features and a new audio engine delivering truly professional sound quality. Everything is optimized for CPU efficiency, so complex projects with many instruments and effects are handled with ease.
NanoStudio 2 is also a fully featured host for Audio Unit (AUv3) instruments, audio effects and MIDI effects.
NanoStudio 2 doesn't yet have linear audio tracks, so if you need to record long guitar or vocal sections then it may not be the app for you. The good news is that this will be coming in 2019, along with a number of other exciting developments.
For composing and arranging there are powerful fully featured editors for songs, MIDI parts, automation and samples. All editors share a clean and consistent user interface which means you'll be up to speed with them in no time.
The sequencer supports tempo and time signature tracks (including tempo ramps) and Ableton Link.
Introducing Obsidian, NanoStudio's versatile synth. Obsidian creates analogue sounds ranging from deep basslines and fat pads all the way up to squealing 303 lines and heavily distorted leads. Each voice has 2 anti-aliased oscillators modulated in mix, ring or sync configurations fed into a low, band or high pass 2 pole resonant filter.
Obsidian's virtual patchbay allows you to connect 3 envelope generators and 4 beat-sync LFO's to create modulation mayhem. Real-time performance becomes a truly interactive experience with dual X/Y controllers, accelerometer input and a pitch bend wheel, all totally configurable via the patchbay. Controller movements can be recorded and edited using the sequencer.
It doesn't stop there. NanoStudio allows you to use multiple synths simultaneously, each with its own insert effects such as waveshaping, chorus and delay. When you want to go beyond basic oscillators, load up a sample and process it just like a normal synth voice - great for mashing up vocals or even the whole mix.
When you're ready to get really creative, NanoStudio allows you to resample its own output and trigger the sample via the pads or keys, freeing up synths and effects to add even more sonic goodness to your composition.
Slate is a performance pad instrument for triggering samples. Adjust pitch, pan, volume and envelopes and assign each sample to one of its 3 output busses, each with its own effect sends and filter setup.
Everything's brought together by a mixer with unlimited tracks, arbitrary track grouping and audio/MIDI sends. Tracks can have an unlimited number of insert effects.
There are 11 effects to choose from, including reverb, sidechain compressor/expander, EQ with spectrum analysis, look-ahead limiter, delay, exciter, chorus, flanger and phaser. You can add AU audio/MIDI effects to the chain and use them just like an internal effect.
There are many mixdown options available with quality settings up to 32 bit/96kHz and support for file formats including wav, aiff, ogg and M4A. You can mixdown track stems in a single operation or select just a region of the song - great for resampling.
Sharing options include the iOS Files app, Dropbox, AudioShare, iTunes File Sharing, AirDrop, email, and importing from your iTunes music library. It’s a breeze to share multiple files in a single operation as NanoStudio automatically handles zip files for you.
There’s also a built-in WebDAV server for full control and backup of your files using any desktop computer or WebDAV client.
